During a career spanning several decades, Joan was involved with the written word ranging from text for theatre programmes to articles on scientific research and newspaper journalism. As a reporter at The Pretoria News, she wrote hard news, profiles, theatre and book reviews as well as feature stories. At the CSIR, she edited scientific papers for specialist publications, wrote scripts for audio-visual programmes and was editor for the internationally distributed journal, Scientiae. At the former Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal, she compiled programme notes for drama and opera and was responsible for media liaison to publicise various productions.. She was on the editorial team of the glossy monthly SA Panorama and the weekly news journal, SA Digest. During and after the 1994 elections, Joan headed the Media Liaison team at the University of Pretoria also editing English text for in-house and corporate publications. She holds a BA from the University of Pretoria majoring in English and Latin, a BA (Hons) English Language and Literature from Unisa and TroisiËme DegrË from the Alliance Francaise. Since 1999, she has lectured in Media Studies and English to among others, journalism students at the TUT and other tertiary institutions in Pretoria.
